Entering New Markets. Connecting New Audiences

In 2018, Air Namibia was preparing to introduce a new connection between Southern and West Africa, with its Windhoek–Lagos–Accra service scheduled to commence on 29 June 2018.

For the airline, the launch represented more than the introduction of a new route. It was an opportunity to introduce Air Namibia to new audiences in two important West African markets and establish consideration among travellers who may not have previously considered the airline as part of their journey.

KanMedia supported Air Namibia’s digital market-entry efforts with a campaign designed to build awareness, create interest, capture existing travel intent and connect prospective travellers with the digital journey toward booking.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Introducing a new connection to a new audience.

The Windhoek–Lagos–Accra service created a direct connection between Namibia and West Africa, opening a new travel opportunity across two important markets.

But a new route only creates value when people know it exists.

The challenge was therefore not simply to announce the route. Air Namibia needed to reach relevant audiences in Lagos and Accra, communicate the value of the new connection and create enough interest for prospective travellers to explore the opportunity further.

The campaign needed to make a new connection visible — and make it relevant.

THE CHALLENGE

Creating awareness where there was no existing demand for the route.

Entering a new market requires a different approach from communicating with an established customer base.

Prospective travellers may not know the airline, may not know the route exists, and may not yet be actively looking for it.

At the same time, there are audiences who are already searching for flights, destinations and travel options between the relevant markets.

KanMedia’s challenge was to address both sides of that journey: create demand among audiences who had not yet considered the opportunity, while capturing demand from people already demonstrating travel intent.

THE APPROACH

Creating demand. Capturing demand.

KanMedia developed a digital-first approach that brought audience planning, creative, display media, search and the digital experience together around one objective: moving prospective travellers from awareness toward action.

The strategy was built around a simple principle.

Display creates demand. Search captures demand.

Display media provided the opportunity to introduce Air Namibia and the new West African connection to relevant audiences in Lagos and Accra. Destination-led messaging and campaign creative were used to create awareness and encourage audiences to explore the new route.

Search played a different but complementary role.

Rather than waiting for audiences to encounter the campaign, search advertising allowed the campaign to engage people who were already expressing travel intent — including people actively searching for flights, destinations and travel options connected to the markets.

Together, these channels created a connected media approach rather than treating each advertisement as an isolated communication.

CREATING DEMAND

Introducing the opportunity.

The first challenge was getting the new connection in front of the right people.

Display advertising allowed Air Namibia to reach relevant audiences beyond those who were already searching for flights. The campaign used digital creative and destination-led messaging to introduce the airline, communicate the new West African connection and create curiosity around the route.

The objective was not simply visibility.

It was to give prospective travellers a reason to stop, understand the opportunity and consider where it could take them.

CAPTURING DEMAND

Turning existing intent into an opportunity.

While display helped create awareness, search allowed the campaign to meet audiences who were already looking.

People searching for flights, destinations and travel options connected to Lagos, Accra and the wider region were already demonstrating a degree of intent.

Search advertising gave Air Namibia a way to appear at that moment of consideration and connect that intent with the new route.

This created an important relationship between the two media environments.

Display helped create the conversation. Search helped capture the people already looking for it.

CONNECTING THE DIGITAL JOURNEY

From media exposure to meaningful action.

A campaign does not end when someone sees an advertisement or clicks a search result.

The experience that follows needs to continue the same story.

For Air Namibia, the campaign was therefore designed as a connected journey — moving audiences from discovering the new connection, to exploring the opportunity, to considering the route and ultimately toward the airline’s booking environment.

Media created the opportunity to engage.

Creative communicated the story.

The digital experience provided the next step.

Together, these elements created a clearer path between awareness and action.

CAMPAIGN CREATIVE

Bringing the new route to life.

The campaign translated the market-entry strategy into digital creative designed to make the new connection clear, relevant and actionable.

Destination-led messaging, promotional creative and direct calls to action gave prospective travellers a reason to discover the route and continue exploring the opportunity.

The creative was not treated as a separate layer from the media strategy. It was developed to work within the wider customer journey — helping audiences understand the opportunity at the moment they encountered it and encouraging the next step.

THE DIGITAL EXPERIENCE

Building a path beyond the click.

The campaign connected advertising activity with a digital experience designed to support the audience as they moved further into consideration.

Someone encountering the campaign for the first time needed a reason to explore.

Someone actively searching needed a relevant path forward.

And someone already considering the journey needed access to the information required to make a decision.

By connecting media activity with the digital experience, the campaign created a journey that extended beyond individual advertisements and supported the progression from interest toward booking.

THE ENGAGEMENT

Multiple capabilities. One market-entry objective.

Supporting the campaign required more than individual media placements.

KanMedia brought together digital campaign strategy, audience and market planning, search advertising, display media, campaign creative, digital experience and performance optimisation as interconnected parts of the engagement.

Each played a role in the wider objective: introducing Air Namibia and its new connection to audiences in Lagos and Accra, generating interest and creating a path toward action.

THE RESULT

A digital launch platform for a new market.

The campaign gave Air Namibia a digital platform through which to introduce its new Lagos and Accra connection to prospective travellers.

By combining awareness-building display media with intent-led search, campaign creative and a connected digital experience, the campaign addressed both sides of market entry: creating awareness among audiences who had not yet considered the opportunity and capturing people already demonstrating an interest in travel.

The result was not simply a collection of advertisements.

It was a connected digital approach built around the journey from awareness to intent, and from intent toward action.

THE KANMEDIA PERSPECTIVE

New markets require more than visibility.

Entering a new market is not simply about being seen.

It requires an understanding of who needs to be reached, where their attention exists, what will make them engage and how that engagement can progress toward a meaningful business action.

That is where connected thinking becomes important.

Strategy creates direction.
Creative creates attention.
Media creates reach and intent.
Digital experience creates the path forward.

When those elements work together, a campaign becomes more than a collection of touchpoints.

It becomes a system for creating momentum.
